Dies Natalis 2016

Leiden University will celebrate its 441st anniversary, on monday 8 february 2016 in the Leiden Pieterskerk. Everyone is welcome to attend or follow the ceremony live by video.

The ceremony will start at 15.00 hrs. precisely, at Pieterskerkhof 1A.
A simultaneous translation of the ceremony will be provided in English and the ceremony will be broadcast live.

Dies lecture

Geert de Snoo

The Dies lecture will be delivered by Geert de Snoo, Professor of Conservation Biology, and Dean of the Faculty of Science.

The lecture will be entitled Successful nature conservation.

Honorary Doctorate

Jennifer Tour Chayes

Jennifer Tour Chayes

During the ceremony, an Honorary Doctorate will be conferred on Dr Jennifer Tour Chayes, researcher on Probability Theory, Discrete Mathematics and Statistical Physics. Dr Chayes is Distinguished Scientist and Managing Director, Microsoft Research, New York City and New England.

The Honorary Supervisor is Frank den Hollander, Professor of Probability Theory and Statistical Physics, Mathematical Institute, Faculty of Science. The Dean of the Faculty is Professor Geert de Snoo.


The music will be performed by the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts / De Veenfabriek.


During the reception following the official ceremony, there will be the opportunity to congratulate the members of the Executive Board of the University, the Dies lecturer, the Honorary Doctor and her Supervisor, the Deans of the Faculties, and their partners.

The reception will start at approximately 16.30 hrs.
